For the next 40 years little is known in terms of the continuing contact between the Romans and the Caledonians, and it is only when Agricola arrives on the scene that direct prolonged conflict occurs. Gnaeus Julius Agricola was born in 40 CE in Frejus, in what is now southern France, into a senatorial family. He is best known for being the military mastermind who oversaw the Roman conquest of Britain, with most of the details of his career coming from a biography De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae (“On the life and character of Julius Agricola”), written by his son-in-law, the Roman historian Tacitus, in 98 CE. Agricola’s early military career was spent in Britain where he initially served as tribunus militum to the Governor Suetonius Paulinus (58 CE – 62 CE), meaning that he was in Britain at the time of Boudicca’s[70] famous rebellion in 60 CE He went on to be quaestor (64 A.D), tribune of the people (66 CE), praetor (68 CE), and then in 71 CE he was made commander of the 20th Legion in Britain. His career continued to go well, and after spells as Governor of Aquitania, he became a consul in 77 CE He finally returned to Britain in 78 CE as governor.
